The story

Malik-e-Maidan, meaning 'Lord of the Battlefield', is a giant medieval cannon set on the Sherzah Burj bastion in Vijayapura. It is among the largest guns of its age known to have been fired, and the Adil Shahi rulers linked it with their 16th-century victory over the Vijayanagara Empire.

The gun was cast in bell metal by Muhammad bin Hussain Rumi, a craftsman from Turkey. It is about 4.45 metres long and 1.5 metres in diameter, and weighs around 55 tonnes. Its muzzle is shaped as the head of a lion, and an inscription on the barrel is credited to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
