The story

Krishna Mandapam, also called the Krishna Cave Temple, is a rock-cut shrine in Mamallapuram belonging to the town's UNESCO World Heritage group of monuments. Narasimhavarman I of the Pallava dynasty sponsored the work, and the shrine honours Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu. It is one of the biggest cave temples cut into rock in this region.

Its main feature is a wide bas-relief of Krishna raising Govardhan Hill to shelter the people and cattle of Brindavan from the storm sent by an angry Indra, after Krishna had persuaded the villagers to skip Indra's festival. Around the central scene, the carvers added shepherds, farmers and herdswomen at their daily work.
