The story

The Trimurti Cave Temple in Mamallapuram is a rock-cut shrine honouring the three gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, whose carved figures occupy its central part. Tradition credits its making to the Pallava ruler Narasimhavarman I, known as Mamalla, in the 7th century, and says the carvings were inspired by visions the king had.

One story holds that the king built it to thank the gods for helping drive out demons. Another tells of wandering ascetics who found the caves and stayed for years to meditate. The walls also carry scenes from Hindu mythology. Arjuna's Penance is a short walk away, and the Shore Temple is nearby.
