Kottakkavu Mar Thoma Syro-Malabar Pilgrim Church in North Paravur is, according to St Thomas Christian tradition, one of the churches founded by the apostle St Thomas in 52 AD, and among the first churches in India. It is counted among the Ezharappallikal, the group of churches he is said to have founded, with Kodungallur, Kokkamangalam, Palayoor, Kollam, Niranam, Thiruvithamcode and Nilackal.
In the 9th century Mar Sabor and Mar Proth, who had come from Persia, rebuilt the church, which was later named after them, and a Persian cross they engraved in granite, the Kottakkavu Sliva, is kept in the chapel facing the church. A Syriac manuscript of 1556 in the Vatican was copied here. The old church, the third on the site, was built in 1308 and has been reconstructed in the 21st century.
