The story

Kothandaramar Temple is in Thillaivilagam, a village in Thiruthuraipoondi taluk of Tiruvarur district, around 20 km from Thiruthuraipoondi town. It is dedicated to Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, worshipped here as Kothandaramar or Veera Kothandaramar along with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. Valmiki is said to have glorified the temple, and it is counted among the 108 Abhimana Kshethrams of the Vaishnava tradition.

It belongs to the Pancha Rama Kshetrams, five Rama temples in Tiruvarur district that are each said to be places mentioned in the Ramayana, and it is regarded as the first among them. The others are at Mudikondan, Adambar, Paruthiyur and Vaduvur. A standing Hanuman about four feet tall is the temple's special feature, and devotees point out the vein shown on Rama's foot and the unusual tip of his arrow.
