The story

Kuzhagar Temple, also called Kodi Kuzhagar or Amrithakadeswarar Temple, is a Shiva temple in the town of Kodikkarai, which takes its name from the deity. It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam: Sundarar and Tirugnanasambandar mention the place as Kuzhagar Kovil in the 7th-century Tevaram. Its origins are traced to the Cholas, and its inscriptions begin with Aditya Chola (871–907) and continue through Rajaraja I, Rajendra I and Kulothunga I, recording gifts such as 90 sheep given by a merchant to keep a lamp burning. Royal patronage carried on under the Nayaks.

The complex has three courtyards and a five-tiered rajagopuram. The east-facing central shrine holds a granite linga, and the hall before it has granite images of Ganesha, Murugan, Nandi and the Navagrahas. As in other Tamil Shiva temples, Dakshinamurthy, Durga and Chandikeswarar occupy the walls around the sanctum, and granite walls enclose the second precinct. The temple is run by the state's Hindu Religious and Endowment Board.
