01 — The story

Koothanur Maha Saraswathi Temple stands in the town of Koothanur in Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, and honours Saraswathi, goddess of learning in Hindu belief. Temples to Saraswati are very rare in India, and this is the only Hindu temple in Tamil Nadu where she is the main deity.

The Tamil poets Ottakoothar and Kambar both sang the praises of the temple. Of the festivals held here, Vijayadasami is the most popular, and it is the occasion that draws the greatest number of devotees to Koothanur.
