The story

Kohoj is a medieval hill fort near Palghar, just off the Mumbai–Ahmedabad highway, some 104 km from Mumbai, and roughly 10 km along the Manor–Wada road, with a lake called Pazhar at its foot. Tradition puts its age at around 800 years. It watched over the nearby coast and was among the 23 forts Shivaji gave up to the Mughals under the Purandar treaty on 11 June 1665. It has long been abandoned and is now ruined.

The climb from Vaghote village is of moderate difficulty and takes about two and a half hours. On the plateau stands a restored temple of Shiva, with rock-cut cisterns nearby, some still holding drinking water, an image of Hanuman and stretches of fortification. A pinnacle shaped like a man by wind erosion changes form as it is seen from different sides, and a Krishna temple lies further along the path.
