The story

The Magudeswarar Temple at Kodumudi in Erode district, about 40 km from Erode and 25 km from Karur, stands on the west bank of the Kaveri close to Kodumudi railway station. It is the sixth of the Kongu region's temples praised in the Tevaram hymns. Legend says the sage Agastya grabbed the linga as it began to vanish, leaving his fingerprints on it, and a rock in the river opposite is held to be where a crow tipped over his cup. Pandya kings patronised the temple, which is also called Tiruppandikodumudi.

The east-facing complex measures about 640 by 484 feet and has three eastern entrances. Because it holds shrines to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, it is also called Trimurthy Kovil. Shiva is worshipped as Kodumudi Nathar or Magudeswarar, his consort as Panmozhi Nayaki, and Vishnu as Veeranarayana Perumal. Among its separate stone shrines are those of Anjaneya, Shani and the sun and moon, and its sacred tree is a vanni.
