The story

Kelve Fort, or Kelva Fort, stands amid a casuarina plantation on Kelwa Beach in Mangelwada, Kelve village, 12.5 km from Palghar. Built by the Portuguese, it held a garrison of sixty men in 1727, seven of them European, with fifteen guns but no gunners, most of the guns being unserviceable. After Chimaji Appa's siege of Vasai, the Marathas captured it on 10 January 1739, and the British took it in 1818.

The rectangular fort is in ruins, and half of it lies below the level of the sand; it was dug out in 2008–09. Its outer walls, steps, parapets and four triangular corner bastions are still of solid masonry in good order, and the east-facing entrance gate is followed by a second gate at a right angle. A small fort, Kelve Pankot, stands at the mouth of Kelve creek.
