The story

The Kamteswari Temple at Gosanimari, in the Dinhata I block of Cooch Behar district, is dedicated to the goddess Kamteswari and lies about 8 km from Dinhata railway station. Both the Khen and Koch dynasties worshipped the goddess, so who first built the shrine has been debated; it is now accepted that the original was destroyed and the present building was raised in 1665 by Maharaja Pran Narayan of Cooch Behar State.

The temple is 14 m high on a 9.9 m square base, with a Bengal char-chala roof, curved cornice and circular dome on top. The main entrance on the west has a nahabatkhana, and a second door opens to the north. Inside are two Shiva lingas, an image of Brahma, a Narayan shila, an ashtadhatu Gopal and a bronze Surya, while a Pala-era Surya on the north wall and a Pala-era Vishnu in the south-east corner were brought from elsewhere. It is a state protected monument.
