Kabir Chaura Math, or Kabir Math, honours the 15th-century weaver, mystic and poet Kabir in the Kabir Chaura neighbourhood of Varanasi, about 2 km from Varanasi and Kashi railway stations. Kabir, traditionally said to have been born in 1398, shaped the Bhakti movement, and his verses appear in the Guru Granth Sahib. The complex blends features of a mosque and a temple and holds both a samadhi and a mazaar in his memory; legend says his body turned to flowers at death, shared between Hindus and Muslims.
Inside are the Beejak Mandir, which grew from the platform where Kabir taught, the Kabir-Hut and Kabir Chabutara platforms, and Neeru Teela, where his parents Neeru and Nima rest. A memorial room keeps his worn wooden sandals in a glass case, alongside a library and a garden. The quarter is known as the mohalla of musicians, home to the Banaras Gharana and to artists such as Samta Prasad and Rajan and Sajan Mishra.
