01 — The story

The story

Sankatha Devi Temple in Varanasi honours the goddess Sankatha, whose name marks her as the one who clears away difficulties and fear. She is regarded as a form of Chandi and is called a sister of Vaishno Devi. The King of Baroda built the temple in the 18th century, when the adjoining Sankatha Ghat was also laid out.

Local tradition holds that the Pandavas worshipped the goddess during their exile in the forest, and she is known as a protector of the defenceless. Unlike at most goddess shrines, worshippers are allowed to touch her feet. Friday is the main day of worship, when people come with flowers and prayers for protection, healing or success in exams, and many simply sit quietly in the shrine.
