The story

Joysagar Tank, also called Joysagar Borpukhuri, lies about 5 km from the centre of Sivasagar in Assam. The Ahom king Rudra Singha had it dug in 1697, in only 45 days, in memory of his mother, Joymoti Konwari. It covers 318 acres (1.28 sq km), and its water stands 14 feet above the level of the surrounding ground.

On the northern bank stand three sets of temples, the most renowned being the Joy Dol, or Keshavnarayan Vishnu Dol, dedicated to Vishnu and his many forms; locals visit these temples every day. The tank is among the most famous sights of Sivasagar, drawing large numbers of visitors, including tourists from abroad. In winter hundreds of migratory birds settle on the water, and bird-watching becomes a popular pastime.
