The story

The Jorbangla Temple stands at Dakshinbazar, Chandrakona, in the Ghatal subdivision of Paschim Medinipur district, and is a state protected monument. The Bhan kings are thought to have built it, possibly in the 17th century; the West Bengal State Archaeology department has since restored it.

The jor-bangla form joins two structures modelled on the traditional village huts of Bengal, the front one acting as a porch and the rear one holding the shrine. The scholar David J. McCutchion counted Chandrakona's among the earliest jor-bangla temples and described it as a standard example, built of laterite with extensive stucco and measuring about 28 by 26 feet. The form may have grown out of the ek-bangla, which was popular for mazars and dargahs.
