The story

The Iranshah Atash Bahram in Udvada, a small coastal town in Valsad district, ranks among the most sacred fire temples of the Zoroastrian faith. Parsis travel here from across India and overseas to pray, and the temple has long shaped the town's identity as a centre of Parsi religious life and tradition. Only Zoroastrians may enter the temple itself.

Other visitors come to see the town around it: quiet lanes of old houses, a seafront on the Arabian Sea and a strong community feel. Udvada is also known for Parsi cooking, with eateries serving dhanshak, sali marghi, sali gosht, fish dishes, rava sheera, macaroons and nan khatai. Roads link it to Valsad, Surat and Mumbai.
