01 — The story

The story

The Indian Museum in Kolkata was founded in 1814, which makes it one of the oldest museums in the country and among its most respected. Over two centuries it has added new wings and galleries to hold a collection that keeps growing, spanning art, archaeology, anthropology and natural history.

Among the best-known exhibits are Egyptian mummies of royal children. The natural history galleries show fossils, mounted animals and geological specimens, including a real dinosaur egg. An anthropology section is given over to the customs and material culture of India's many communities, and the art and heritage galleries round out a visit that easily fills several hours.
