The story

This temple at Kodumbalur in Pudukkottai district honours Idangazhi Nayanar, a Shaivite king born here who ruled the Konadu country from Kodumbalur. He is remembered for building temples and for his care for fellow devotees. In the story told of him, a worshipper who had run out of means stole paddy from the royal stores to keep up his daily worship of Shiva; when the king learned why, he freed the man, threw open the granary and invited devotees to take what they needed.

The shrine to the king was built some years ago and has since been renovated, and Aippasi Karthigai is celebrated here. It lies on the Trichy–Madurai road beside Viralimalai, a kilometre north of the Trichy Chatram bus stand, with the Mukundesvarar Temple a short way to the north.
