01 — The story

The story

Hathras Fort, also called Raja Dayaram Fort, Shri Dauji Mandi and, locally, Kila Gate, stands in Hathras city, Uttar Pradesh. Raja Dayaram Singh built it in the 18th century, and it draws many visitors even though the state does not list it as an official tourist site.

In February 1817 the fort was the scene of the Siege of Hathras, sometimes called the Hathras Rebellion, a clash between Raja Dayaram and the British East India Company. Late in the 20th century the building, by then some 200 years old, was converted into a temple to the Hindu deity Dauji, which gives the site its present religious role.
