The story

Ghanashyam's House, also known as the Nati Gosain Dol, is a brick monument of the early 18th century on the west bank of Joysagar Tank, 4 km west of Sivasagar town in Assam. It was built in the reign of the Ahom king Rudra Singha and dedicated to the architect Ghanashyam, who came from Bengal or Cooch Behar and whom the king engaged to plan the city of Rangpur; Ghanashyam is believed to have been a Muslim who became a Hindu. Some theories instead tie the building to Rajeswar Singha or to the reign of Pramatta Singha.

The design blends Hindu and Islamic features. It follows a Bengal ekaratha form, yet its cells hold mihrabs like those in mosques, and the flat roof over its three arched gatehouses is lined with battlements. Terracotta plaques show lingas, Ramayana scenes, avatars of the gods, mythical animals, hunts and demons, along with floral and geometric patterns. Past earthquakes have left the building slightly tilted.
