The story

Gangadeeswarar Temple is a Shiva temple in the Purasawalkam area of Chennai, where the god is worshipped as Gangadeeswarar and the goddess as Pankajambal. It is held in the same regard as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and tradition says its lingam is the 108th that Bhagirathan, of the line of Sagaran, set up. Kulothunga Chola II is credited with building and repairing it, and it has five tiers.

Every year at Thai Poosam the temple tank hosts a three-day Theppa Utsavam, or float festival, and a canal was built to bring water to the tank. More recently, rainwater from the surrounding roads has been channelled into it under the Singara Chennai 2.0 scheme. The temple has a long list of other images, among them Sathya Narayana Perumal, Brahma, Dakshinamurthy, Kashi Vishwanath, Somaskandar, Durga, Uchchishta Ganapathy, Shanmugar, the Navagrahas, Bhagirathan himself and the 63 Nayanmars.
