01 — The story

The story

Gagan Mahal is a palace within the old fort of Vijayapura, built by Ali Adil Shah I of the Adil Shahi dynasty in the 1560s. It was used both as a royal residence and as a large hall for the court, and for a long time it stood at the centre of the kingdom's affairs.

The building is best known for the great arch in the middle of its front, which spans 60 feet 9 inches and shows the engineering skill of its builders. It remains one of the principal Adil Shahi monuments of the city, alongside landmarks such as Gol Gumbaz, Ibrahim Rauza and Bara Kaman.
