The story

Ezhai Kaatha Amman Temple stands at Koyil Patti, within Kurichipatti panchayat, about 14 km from Melur in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. It belongs to the area known locally as Vellalur Nadu, where it and the Valladikaarar Temple are the two important shrines; the two deities are regarded as sister and brother.

The goddess's festival falls in September and is celebrated with more joy here than Deepavali or Pongal. For 15 days people fast from meat and from flour-based foods such as idli and dosai, coconut and lemon trees are left uncut, building work stops and hotels close. The temple priest chooses seven girls of about 10 years from the more than 65 villages of Vellalur; they are honoured as the goddess's daughters and carry out holy service throughout the festival.
