The story

Dumna Nature Reserve is an ecotourism area run by Jabalpur Municipal Corporation, about 10 km from the city and close to Jabalpur Airport. Its roughly 1,800 acres of forest occupy a plateau some 40 m above the town. The land was handed to the municipality to serve as catchment for Khandari Dam, finished in 1883 by J. H. Morris, then Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces, and still supplying part of the city's water. In his book Highlands of Central India, Captain James Forsyth recorded the area as a favourite spot for British officers' tiger shoots.

The dry deciduous forest is mixed with grassland and wetland. Surveys have recorded 296 bird species, a third of them migrants, 57 mammals including leopards, chital, barking deer and four-horned antelope, crocodiles and rare butterflies such as the Anomalous Nawab. There is a children's park and a restaurant, and the dam area offers a hanging bridge, a toy train, boating and fishing. Bathing and swimming are banned because of the crocodiles.
