Deva Pureeswarar Temple is a Shiva temple at Thevur, a village close to Kilvelur. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, and both Appar and Sambandar sang its praises.
Several legends are attached to it. The Devas are said to have worshipped Shiva here to be cleansed of the sin of slaying Vruddhasura. A Ramayana story has Kubera praying here to recover the wealth Ravana took from him, and in a Mahabharata tale King Virata worshipped at the temple with his son Uttara. Today it is visited especially by unmarried people and by couples hoping for children.
