Dativare Fort, also called Hira Dongar, stands on a small hillock at a commanding point beside the Vaitarna River in Palghar district, 72 km from Vasai. Little is known of its history, though it was probably built by the Portuguese.
The nearest town is Saphale, 107 km from Mumbai by rail, and the base village of Dativare, or Dantiware, is 15 to 20 km away by road. Saphale and Edwan have hotels, and tea and snacks are sold along the coast road. The path begins on the hillock north of the village, and a wide, safe road now leads up; the gate is about half an hour's walk. Only a few walls and ruined bastions remain.
