St. Lazarus' Church in Chennai goes back to the 16th century, when the Portuguese built it in their settlement of Sao Tome de Meliapore. The oldest records of the church that survive are from 1582.
It has been rebuilt twice since then, first by the Madeiros family in 1637 and again in 1928. In 1952 it was renamed, and today it goes by the name Church of Our Lady of Guidance.
