This museum in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. Its galleries follow his life in order, from birth and childhood to his coronation in 1674 and his reign, with labels in English and Marathi.
A life-size statue of Shivaji in his familiar dress, sword in hand, stands near the entrance. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and letters, along with swords, spears, bows, arrows and armour used by Maratha soldiers in the 17th century. A carved replica of the coronation throne is a highlight, and one section covers Jijabai, his mother, and her part in shaping him. The museum sometimes hosts music and dance programmes, and Bibi Ka Maqbara and Daulatabad Fort are close by.
