01 — The story

The story

Salim Ali Lake, or Salim Ali Sarovar, lies beside Himayat Bagh near Delhi Gate in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city. It is named after Dr Salim Ali, the naturalist known as the Birdman of India, who was the first Indian to carry out systematic bird surveys across the country. The lake and the green belt around it cover roughly 1.15 sq km and are kept as a bird sanctuary.

Herons, egrets, storks, ducks, coots and kingfishers are present through the year, along with the Indian pond heron, black-winged stilt, Asian openbill and Indian peafowl. Winter brings migrants that add to the numbers. Boat rides on the water and footpaths through the trees give visitors two ways to watch the birds, and the place is popular with photographers and with families looking for a quiet outing inside the city.
