The story

Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathi Temple, near Mavelikkara in Alappuzha district, is one of the best-known temples in Kerala. It lies about 4 km west of Mavelikkara and 7 km north of Kayamkulam on the Kayamkulam–Thiruvalla road. Its deity is Bhadrakali, born from Shiva's third eye to slay the demon Daruka and worshipped for prosperity and salvation.

The temple, believed to be 1,200 years old, sits at the centre of the four oldest of its 13 karas, or territories, with the other nine around them. The Plackudy Illom family of Ambalapuzha holds its tantric rights. It is the second-richest temple under the Travancore Devaswom Board after Sabarimala, and some of the paddy offered here is used for the Appam and Aravana at Sabarimala. UNESCO has gathered details on its customs, such as Kuthiyottam and Kumbha Bharani, while weighing possible heritage listing.
