The story

Chengalamma Parameshwari Temple stands at the southern tip of Sullurpeta town in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, beside the Kalangi river. It is 79 km from Chennai, 84 km from Tirupati and 97 km from Nellore. Its founding is placed in the fourth and fifth centuries, while its recorded story goes back to the 10th century, when the ruling Cholas are said to have built a small hut for the goddess, believed to have emerged from the river.

The idol brings three goddesses together: Parvati on the left, Saraswati on the right and Mahalakshmi in the centre, which is why she is called Trikale Chengali. The eight-armed image holds a weapon in each hand and stands over a demon. The goddess was first known as Tenkali, or Dakshina Kali, then as Chengali, and finally as Chengalamma.
