The story

This historic Roman Catholic chapel stands on a hill on Chorão in Goa. Built in 1761, it is the only relic left of the Chorão Seminary, and its old name was the chapel of the Celestial School. It is polygonal, with an elegant dome on Greek-style columns, and seminary inmates and Jesuit novices once came here in the evenings for rest and fresh air. Acoustic phenomena can still be observed inside.

After the seminary closed, the chapel stood abandoned for a long time. Fr Jose Filipe de Andrade, vicar of Our Lady of Grace Church, began repairs in 1900, clearing the trees that hid the building and repainting the pictures of St. Jerome, and it reopened for worship on 17 August 1901. The Portuguese regime classified it as a National Monument in 1932, and more improvements followed in 1959. Mass is offered here each year for the feast of the patron.
