01 — The story

The story

Chandod, in Vadodara district, lies where the Narmada meets the Aursanga and the unseen Gupta Saraswati, which has earned it the name Dakshini Prayag. The riverbank here, known as Chanod-Karnali, draws Hindus from across India to carry out last rites, in the belief that rituals on this stretch of the Narmada help the dead reach moksha.

The town's ghats include Chakrapani, Yama, Harijan, Kapileshwar and Swami Ghats. The best known is Mallharao Ghat, 60 feet wide with 64 steps. According to legend, a minister of Malhar Rao Holkar stole from the treasury; when the money turned up under a tulsi plant, the ruler had it spent on building this ghat instead of simply punishing him.
