The story

The Kalloorkadu St Mary's Basilica at Champakulam, known as Champakulam Valia Palli, is a Syro-Malabar church in Alappuzha district under the Archeparchy of Changanacherry. Believed to have been founded in AD 427 and rebuilt many times, it ranks among India's oldest churches and is mother church to almost all the Catholic Syrian churches of central Travancore. It was once under the Niranam church, which tradition credits to St Thomas himself.

Many rock inscriptions and archaeological finds around the church record its history, and its open-air rock cross, dated to AD 1151, ranks among the oldest crosses whose age is clearly documented. The church played a role in 18th-century ecumenical efforts, and the martyr Ikkako Kathanar was born in the parish. Pope Francis raised it to a basilica on 27 November 2016, the first in the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. Holy Qurbana is held several times on Sundays and every morning on weekdays.
