01 — The story

The story

Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary, notified in 2022, protects 686.4 square kilometres in the Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. It fills the gap between the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, creating one large, continuous stretch of protected land. Two important elephant corridors, Nandimangalam-Ulibanda and Kovaipallam-Anebiddahalla, pass through it.

The sanctuary supports 35 species of mammals and 238 of birds. Among its notable animals are Leith's softshell turtle, the smooth-coated otter, the marsh crocodile, the grizzled giant squirrel and the four-horned antelope, and the lesser fish eagle is among its birds.
