The story

Budha Ganesha Temple, where Ganesha is honoured in the form of an old man, stands close to the Dasashwamedh Ghat on the Baitarani River in Jajpur, Odisha, and only a short way from the Yajna Varaha Temple. Ganesh Chaturthi is its main festival.

The temple follows the Kalinga order and is built entirely of khondalite, with a recent coat of lime plaster added to protect the sculpture. Like temples at Sonepur and Bhubaneswar it combines rekha and pidha forms. Loose sculptures found here include figures of Vishnu, Mahishamardini and the Jain Tirthankara Shantinath, and on this evidence the temple is dated to the 11th century AD.
