01 — The story

The story

This museum in Koraput carries the name of Biju Patnaik, an aviator who later served as Chief Minister of Odisha. It was set up to honour the state's links with flying and the work of early pioneers in aeronautics, and it has since expanded well beyond a simple memorial.

The collection traces how aviation technology changed over time through aircraft, engines, scale models and other objects, among them fighter jets and helicopters that served with the Indian Air Force. A highlight is a MiG-21FL (Type-77), displayed beside the R-11 Tumansky engine that drove it, which sits under its own protective shed. Cockpit simulators and explanatory exhibits let visitors try out the basics of flight science for themselves.
