The story

The Kamal Maula Mosque in the centre of old Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, has also been called the Bhojshala since 1903, through the efforts of K. K. Lele. It is a Monument of National Importance under the ASI, and its history, ownership and use are disputed between Muslims and Hindus. A 1935 decree of the Dhar Darbar declared that it was a mosque and would remain one.

For years the ASI allowed Hindu worship on Tuesdays and Muslim prayers on Fridays, two hours each, with Sarasvati worship on Vasant Panchami; when festivals coincided, police were needed to keep the peace. In May 2026 the state's High Court, drawing on a 2024 ASI survey, granted worship rights at the complex to the Hindu and Jain communities and suggested the Muslim community seek another site. The parties have appealed to the Supreme Court, and the outcome is awaited.
