01 — The story

The story

Bhattiprolu is a village on the bank of the Krishna River whose history reaches back to the 3rd century BC. Old temples and monuments stand across the area. Its position on the river made it a trading centre, and the cultural contact that followed left a mark on the art, writing and architecture of South India.

Excavations here have found Buddhist remains, including stupas and chaityas, that point to its religious role in the past. The village is thought to have been a seat of learning that produced well-known scholars. A local legend says the sage Narada once came here and performed miracles.
