01 — The story

The story

Belgadia Palace in Baripada was built in 1804 as a residence of the Bhanja dynasty, and members of the royal family still live there. Its design mixes Victorian and Greek elements, with imposing fronts, arched verandahs and large halls, and inside are royal portraits, rare objects and antique furniture from the old kingdom.

One section of the palace now operates as a boutique homestay. Guests are offered guided heritage tours, Odia meals, dance performances, craft workshops and tea in the palace gardens. Cycling tours set out from the palace through Baripada to its markets, temples and nearby villages.
