The story

Also known as the Begumpur Big Mosque, the Begumpur Mosque stands on Madurai Road in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. It was built in the Mughal style by Hyder Ali, ruler of Mysore, who was posted to Dindigul as commandant in 1755 and lived there for many years with his son Tipu. Hyder is said to have built three mosques in the town: one for himself, one for his soldiers and this one for the public.

The mosque and the surrounding area of Begampur are named after Ameerunnisa Begum, Hyder's younger sister, who died in 1766 and was buried here. Her tomb lies in the first building, which has a tiled roof at the front, and an open terrace with an arch leads into the mosque. No mosque in Dindigul is bigger, few are older, and it is still used for prayer.
