The story

Basudev Devalaya is an old Hindu temple dedicated to Basudev at Balikaria in Nalbari district, Assam. It was built by the Ahom king Sutanphaa, who reigned from 1714 to 1744.

Local folklore tells how it came about. A fisherman's net caught fast in a pond called Jaymangal Beel and could not be freed for a week. On the seventh day a local man, Gada Kahar, dreamt that Lord Basudev wished to be released from the net. When news of the dream reached Sutanphaa, the king tried to lift two stones from the spot, and when he failed, he had the temple built there instead.
