01 — The story

The story

Madan Kamdev is an archaeological site about 40 km from Guwahati, where the remains of a temple complex from the 9th and 10th centuries AD lie scattered. The ruins are linked to the Pala dynasty of Kamarupa, though who built the temples and when was debated for a long time. An 1855 account by Edward Dalton of 15 ruined temples near the Silsako Bridge, which the 1897 earthquake destroyed, may refer to this site.

Organised work began only in 1977, when the state's archaeology directorate took charge and uncovered remains of 12 further temples besides the main one; many artefacts had gone missing in the decades before. The carved fragments show dancers, celestial nymphs, deities and embracing couples, and their erotic imagery has earned the site the nickname "Khajuraho of the East".
