Azhikode Lighthouse stands some 8 km to the west of Kodungallur. Its 30-metre concrete tower was inaugurated on 30 April 1982 as a guiding light for Cochin Port; there had been no lighthouse on the spot before. Earlier known as the Periyar River Lighthouse, it replaced a fixed light that the State Port department had shown from a 96-foot mast near the port entrance since 1964.
A radio beacon went on air here on 10 September 1981 and was replaced in 1994 by a differential GPS station. In 1997 the original incandescent lamp gave way to a metal halide lamp with a direct drive system.
