01 — The story

The story

Anasakti Ashram is a study and research centre in Kausani, housed in a plain building surrounded by forest. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for 14 days in 1929, and during that visit he developed the philosophy he named Anasakti Yoga, centred on non-attachment. He was so taken with the views that he called Kausani the 'Switzerland of India'.

The ashram has a museum of photographs and writings from Gandhi's stay, walls lined with his quotations, and a small prayer room used for chanting and meditation. Guests can stay on site and use the library and kitchen. Visitors also come for sunrise and sunset over the Himalayan peaks.
