The story

Yangoupokpi-Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary covers 184.8 sq km of Chandel district in Manipur, on the Myanmar border about 110 km from Imphal. Established in 1989, it lies where the Indian and Burmese geographical zones meet, and its wildlife reflects the biodiversity of the Indo-Burma region.

The hoolock gibbon, India's only ape, lives here. Other residents include the Himalayan black bear, Malayan sun bear, slow loris, stump-tailed macaque, serow, Indian civet, Eurasian otter, pangolin and leopard, and elephants sometimes cross in from the border. October to April is the recommended season, with early morning the best time of day. Places to stay are at Moreh: the Forest Rest House, the Indo-Myanmar Trade Center Rest House and a transit camp at the wildlife office.
