Yama Dharmaraja Temple at Thiruchitrambalam in Thanjavur district is one of the few temples where Yama, the god of death, is the presiding deity. Around him are shrines to Karuppu Sami, Veeranar, Vaduvachi, Muthumani, Rakkachi and Kombukkaran, and images of Chitragupta, the Pambatti Siddhar, and Ayyanar with his consorts Poorna and Pushkala.
Its legend follows on from the burning of Kamadeva, the god of love, who angered Shiva and was reduced to ashes at the spot now marked by the Puradhana Vaneswarar Temple in nearby Peravurani. At Yama's request Kamadeva was revived, and this temple is believed to stand where he returned to life.
