The story

Vizhinjam Lighthouse, also called the Trivandrum Lighthouse, stands near Kovalam beach in Kerala and has been in service since 30 June 1972. Vizhinjam had been a busy port in the 18th and 19th centuries, but there was no lighthouse here before this one; there was probably only a daymark beacon in the 18th century, and after the 19th century the port lay neglected. A lit beacon went up at nearby Kolachal in 1925, and a daymark was placed at Vizhinjam in 1960.

The cylindrical tower is 36 metres high and painted in red and white bands. It is equipped with metal halide lamps and a direct drive mechanism, and its light source was updated on 30 April 2003.
