01 — The story

The story

Vidyasagar Setu, also called the Second Hooghly Bridge, spans the Hooghly between Kolkata and Howrah and is among the longest bridges in India. It is named after Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the Bengali educationist, reformer and philanthropist, and its cable-stayed design has made it one of the city's landmarks.

After 1947 the city's population grew quickly, and Howrah Bridge, then the only crossing, came under heavy strain. A second bridge was planned to share the traffic. Indira Gandhi laid the foundation stone in 1972, but the project took about two decades to complete.

The drive across gives wide views of the river and the skyline, and the middle of the span offers a calm vantage point above the busy city.
