The story

Vavul Mala is a peak of the Vellarimala range in the Western Ghats, standing where Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts meet. At 2,339 m it is the highest point of Kozhikode district and the highest peak of the Western Ghats north of the Nilgiris. Its shape is likened to a camel's hump, and the range is known as the Camel Hump Mountains.

The Chaliyar river valley separates these compact hills from the Nilgiris, though their plant life is much the same. William Logan's Malabar Manual of 1887 described the peak as a landmark visible far out over the Arabian Sea. The climb is counted among the toughest treks in South India.
